Assigning Combat Damage

Normally, the Magic Online game assigns damage from attacking creatures to an opponent or an opponent's blocking creatures for you. However, there are cases when the attacking player has to assign combat damage. Two situations you'll see most often are when an attacker is blocked by more than one creature and when a creature with trample is blocked.

When you can assign a creature's combat damage yourself, spin boxes will appear on each blocking creature during the combat damage step. If the attacker has trample and the total toughness of all blocking creatures is less than the attacker's power, a spin box will also appear on the defending player's life total icon. You can use the arrows on the spin boxes to adjust how the damage will be dealt.

You can't play spells or abilities while you're assigning combat damage. Once you've assigned damage, click OK to put combat damage on the stack. Then you'll have a chance to play spells and abilities.

Assigning Damage to Multiple Blockers
When one of your attackers is blocked by more than one creature, the Magic Online game tries to assign lethal damage to at least the creature with the highest toughness. Any remaining damage will be assigned to the blocker with the next highest toughness and so on, until the damage assigned is equal to the attacking creature's power. If you want to assign damage differently, use the spin boxes on each blocker to change the amount of damage each will be dealt.

Assigning Trample Damage
When an attacking creature with trample is blocked, lethal damage must be assigned to all blocking creatures for any damage to be assigned to the defending player. If you don't (or can't) assign lethal damage to all blocking creatures, you can't assign any damage to the defending player. Magic Online tries to assign as much damage to the defending player as possible.
Say that you attack with Krosan Avenger, a 3/1 creature with trample. Your opponent blocks it with Eager Cadet, a 1/1 creature.

Since Eager Cadet's toughness is 1, Magic Online will assign 1 damage to Eager Cadet and 2 damage to your opponent.

You can use the spin boxes to change the amount of damage assigned to Eager Cadet (you must assign at least 1 damage to the Cadet). The total damage assigned is always equal to Krosan Avenger's power: 3.
